How to choose the right PAT
A few simple questions can help you select the right portable appliance tester.
1. Will you be testing for others?
Get the PAT with the widest range of tests (Micropat Plus and EasyPat 2100 are recommended). Some customers are bound to want ALL the tests available. If you want to do the legal minimum of testing the EPAT 1600 is the best and fastest solution.
2. Do you need a flash test?
Although the Electricity at work regulations don't specify it, some manufacturers recommend it. For hire shops and for roughly handled items (eg. power tools), it is good practice. You need an EPAT2100 or Micropat Plus. Flash testing is more appropriate in a repair environment.
3. Testing 110V items?
Any Martindale PAT will do.
4. Testing office equipment?
Many manufacturers recommend a 25A earth test but this could damage some equipment, especially if the earth path is via a data socket or along a printed circuit board track. If you need a"soft test" (low 100mA test) choose any of the Martindale testers.
5. Testing only on your own equipment? Want the minimum legally required?
The EPAT 1600 will give readings and do the "legal minimum" tests.
6. Do you want computerised records?
Above 400 items we suggest computerisation (Micropat Plus). Below 400 - the EPAT 1600 or EPAT 2100 for speed and simplicity.
